Beware of Linkt Road Toll Scams

Scammers are taking advantage of phone scams pretending to be from toll operator Linkt. Let's take a look at how the scam works and how to be aware.

Linkt road toll scams – what to watch for

Recent years have seen a number of toll roads completed around the greater Sydney area. It’s great news for commuters, but scammers are also trying to get a slice of the toll action.

For many Community First members, recently opened toll roads in and around Sydney are cutting commute times. That’s always welcome news, but it can be hard to keep track of toll payments that are due, paid or outstanding.

Scammers are taking advantage of this with a new wave of phone scams pretending to be from toll operator Linkt.

How the Linkt toll scams work

Linkt advises that scammers might call you and ask for a payment to settle an overdue amount or to update your account details to prevent it from being closed.

They may even send you an email or SMS with a link to a phishing scam website designed to steal your personal information.

What to look out for

Just because a message says it’s from Linkt doesn’t mean it’s genuine. If anything about a message appears odd, take a minute to have a closer look.

Linkt advises there are several things to be on the lookout for. These include:

  • Poor spelling and grammar
  • Strange links that don't look like legitimate websites, and
  • Vague or non specific details.
  • One of the most critical clues to be aware of is the use of urgent language or threats if you don’t take immediate action to pay up.
How to protect yourself

Any messages that we owe money or could face serious action can be very disturbing.

However, it is always important to protect your personal details.

Linkt advises that it does not ask for payment details via links in text messages or emails.

Instead, take the safe and sure route by logging directly into your Linkt account – whether that’s via the Linkt website or the Linkt app.

If you receive an SMS, email or any other message requesting payment, do not click on any links. Delete the message straight away.

What if I have clicked on a link?

If you have clicked on a link or provided any personal details from a message you suspect is a scam, contact Community First immediately. You can also lock your card instantly from within the Community First app. We will arrange to cancel your card and order you a new one.
